Birth: Feb. 20, 1921 Dexter Lane County Oregon, USA Death: Jan. 24, 2012 Hillsboro Washington County Oregon, USA Vaderon E. (Bud) Keeney passed away Jan. 24, 2012, in Hillsboro, Ore. He was born to Walter Willard Keeney and Merthi Ann Bowen on Feb. 20, 1921, in Dexter, Ore. He is known all over the Pacific Northwest for his contributions to the lumber industry. Over his 50-year career as a lumber industry consultant and sawmill construction engineer, he worked on over 80 lumber mill projects. Many were modifications and upgrades, but most were new mills, built from the ground up. He holds three patents for sawmill machinery design. Bud grew up on a small farm in Dexter, Ore., and attended Pleasant Hill high school. He married Ida Elizabeth (Beth) Landon on May 30, 1941. In 1938 he started his career at Giustina Brothers of Eugene, Ore. When World War II started, he joined the U.S. Navy and saw action in the Pacific. After the war, he returned to the lumber mills working at the steam powered mill at Mapleton Lumber Co. and the Fall Creek Lumber Co. He got his big break when the Fisher Marcola mill was started and he hired on as the Millwright. When the mill shut down in 1956, Bud was asked to dismantle it and install the equipment in other mills around the Pacific Northwest. This was so successful that Mr. Fisher asked him to stay on and manage other sawmill modernization projects for FarWest Steel Co. In 1965, Bud started Northwest Materials Handling Co. to continue providing consulting and construction services for lumber mills. During this time he worked for a variety of clients. Many of the projects were for Willamette Industries and Rosboro Lumber Co. in Springfield, Ore. In the early 1970s he was hired by Mr. Miller to work on some mill construction projects including Miller's redwood sawmill project in Crescent City, Calif. For the Stimson Lumber Company in the 1980s he became the Operations Manager of the Stimson Mill at Forest Grove and later VP of Engineering. He retired from Stimson and worked part time for Coe Manufacturing Co. where he built a mill in Georgia among other projects. In the mid 1990s he was asked by Mr. Ford to build one more mill for the Roseburg Lumber Co. This mill produced one million board feet of lumber per day using computer-driven technology. He then retired from lumber mill construction and as a hobby he constructed magnificent Grandfather clocks. At the time of his death he had built over 30 of these clocks and gave them to friends and relatives. In spite of his huge achievements in his profession, he is most remembered for the lives he influenced. He was regarded as a just and fair person who cared about the people he worked with. He and Beth have been faithful members of First Baptist Church of Hillsboro Oregon since 1969. In addition, he personally installed power generating facilities for Hospital of Light in Haiti and provided lumber and materials for church building construction around the Pacific Northwest. He is survived by his wife; three of four children; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Bud was placed to rest in the pioneer section of the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Every Memorial day, Bud had traveled with his wife Beth to decorate his ancestors graves at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. He was very proud to be a descendant of the pioneers and early settlers of the Dexter/Pleasant Hill area. She was the third of four children born to Harry and Nellie Landon. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Eugene, Oregon. Her father grew and sold plant starts to support the family during the Depression. On November 4, 1935, a house fire destroyed the family home. Beth's grandfather was killled in the fire and her oldest sister, Clover, later died from burns trying to rescue him. Beth helped raise Clover's daugher, Yvonne Chapman Ediger, who later did missionary work in Nigeria. Beth also assisted Clover's husband, Rev. Gerald Marvel Chapman, as he worked to become a pastor. Beth met her future husband, Bud Keeney, at the Dexter Baptist Church while assisting Gerald. She was just 14. They continued to date throughout high school and were married May 30, 1941 in Eugene by Rev. Gerald Marvel Chapman. Bud built their first house next to his family's farm in Dexter, Oregon. Shortly after the birth of their first child, Martha "Jane" (Person), Bud was drafted and served on the USS Yakutat on the Pacific front throughout the war. When the war was finally over, Beth celebrated by ringing the churchbell at Dexter with her sister-in-law, Mary Keeney Bowman, for 24 hours. Beth had attended seminary in Portland and desired to serve in the mission field but instead she served as a devoted wife and mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved family dinners where the blessing was said before every meal. Family struggles were met with love. Potato salad fixed everything. Beth remained very active in the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Springfield and later at the Hillsboro First Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and was an active participant in Bible studies and Choir. Beth's favorite pasttime though, was her rose and vegetable garden. She spent many summers canning the bounty and used the roses to make bouquets for the church. Despite having declining health for many years, Beth was able to remain at her home surrounded by family. This is in large part due the loving care she received from her daughter, Merthi Keeney. Bud, Beth's husband of 70 years, went home to be with his Lord last January. The past six months have been difficult for her, but she is now reunited with her beloved husband and the Lord she loved so much. Beth passed away at home with her family by her side Monday, July 23, 2012. Besides her husband, Beth was preceded in death by her daughter and son in law, Jane and Jim Person; also her grandson, John Bassir. She is survived by three children, eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and one great-grandchild due in September. She is also survived by her sister Luella Camp and sister-in-law Mary Bowman.
