I'd like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all who have sent in data & items for the site & the newsletter over the past months.
If anybody has any thoughts on Y2K they would like to share for the January issue please send them in.

Subject: Mother passing away
Dan,
I wanted to let you know my mother, Dorothy Imogene Keeney, died on June 19, 1999, from complications related to leukemia. This past year has been very difficult. Would you add this to your database? I see that you have continued to update your website. It looks great! I think I'll have time to get back into research now. I did send data and pictures to be included in Patricia Foulke Kaufman's new edition. I can't wait to see it.
Best wishes,
Greg

Subject: poem
My Great Grandparents, Benjamin Kessler - Martha Elizabeth Randleman Keeney had the Irish humor when they named their children. They were named alphabetically and this poem was used to remember their names.
Alfred Bertin, Carrie Dell, Ernest Farmer, all is well, George Harvey, Ira James Keeney, Levi Martin, these are our names, Nina Ona, Pearly Q, that is enough, now won't that do?
Now guess who I was named after?
Submitted by Gary Ernest Keeney, Carlisle, Iowa
Editors note; I forwarded a copy of Gary's e-mail to Lana as her husband is descended from Carrie Dell Keeney.
DOUGLAS JAMES8 KLINE (JOHN PHILLIP7, ALLEN DEAN6, CARRIE DELL5 KEENEY, BENJAMIN KESSLER4, SAMUEL THOMAS3, JONATHAN ANTHONY2, JOHN JONATHAN1) was born Private. He met LANA GENE THOMPSON Private, daughter of RAYMOND THOMPSON and LINDA SCHUENING. She was born Private.

I know it a little bit differently. It goes like this:
The Keeney Children's ABC song
Alfred Berten, Carrie Dell, Earnest Farmer fell in the well, George Harvey, Ira James, Levi Martin, that's our names. Nina Ona, Pearlie Q. That's our names and won't that do?
It's on the same lines as Gary's. This came from the "Martin Christopher Randleman, His kin and Heirs 1754-1964" book from Billie Snead Webb. Who knows which is correct?

If you'd like to print out this word search, I've found out that if you highlight what you want then copy and paste into a regular word processing program such as Word Perfect; Word or Star Office, that the table shows up with everything aligned, but if you try notepad in Windows you get a vertical string of text from the table, if you try wordpad the table shows but the text is out of alignment. ~Dan

Of the 45 names listed how many can you find?
Amy, Anna, Ardys, Bill, Carrie, Conner, David, Donald, Douglas, Edward, Eliza, Elizabeth, Elmer, Ethel, Fred, Glenn, George, Grover, Hanna, Harry, Hiram, James, John, Jonathan, Joseph, Keeney, Keith, Ken, Laura, Lavon, Lon, Lori, Mike, Mary, Nancy, Oscar, Patrick, Phillip, Polly, Ralph, Raymond, Samuel, Sara, Thomas, William
Another item "The Keeney Cousins" from Mike Vincent
The grandchildren and some great grandchildren of Edward Carrol Keeney, calling themselves "The Keeney Cousins," meet each year, at 1:30 p.m. on the third Sunday of July, at Gilbert's Restaurant, in Jackson, Michigan. As most of the grandchildren of E. C. are now in their 70's and 80's, the number of attendees is dwindling rapidly each year.
Does anybody know of any family Reunions?
If so send information & I'll include it here.

I'm looking for information on the parents of William KEENEY b. about 1587, possibly in Scotland. marr. Anne DOUGLAS. They had a son William who was to have emigrated to the U.S.
In an e-mail Mike Vincent writes:
"I am looking to make contact with others descended from the line of John Keeney, son of William Keeney. My Keeney line proceeds back as follows: Edward Carroll Keeney (1859-1948) -Jonathan Bishop Keeney (1815-1897) - Joseph Keeney (?-1842) - William Keeney (?-?) - William Keeney (?-?) - John Keeney (1700-?) - John Keeney (1641-1716) - William Keeney (Abt 1601-1675)"

This picture was featured in "The Carlisle Citizen", Friday, June 29, 1951. The picture was taken originally in abt. 1905 at John Hicks & Sarah Ellen (Stumbo) Randleman's home in Carlisle, Iowa. Note there are several identified Keeney's in the picture, but there are others that have not yet been identified. I wonder if anyone else out there can contribute to whom these people are? By the way this is the home that was next owned by Arden W. & Lulu B. Keeney after the death of her parents.
Picture contributed by Constance L. Keeney Jameson, Oct. 1999. By way of Cindy Marcell
The obituary for William Perry Keeney, my grandfather, which was featured in the newspaper. I do not have the paper's name attached to the clipping but I suspect it was probably in the "Carlisle Citizen" of Carlisle, Iowa, the local paper. The date is not listed, however, William died May 06, 1938 so I assume it was printed shortly thereafter. (Newspaper clipping contributed by Constance L. Keeney Jameson, Oct. 1999.) KEENEY, POLK PIONEER, DIES
Veteran of Civil War: Farmer 70 Years. One of Polk county's pioneers, William P. Keeney, 94, died Friday morning at his home in Allen township, seven miles southeast of Des Moines. Mr. Keeney, who had lived on the same farm for 70 years, came to Polk county when Des Moines was little more than the original fort around which the town was built. The city then had one store, and board sidewalks. Starts Orchard. After the Civil War he established Keeney's orchard, thus becoming one of the state's pioneer orchardists and horticulturalists. Mr. Keeney broke the prairie soil with oxen, but kept abreast of the times with his farming and during the latter portion of his 60 years in the fruit business he did considerable work with a tractor. Enlisting during the Civil War when he was only 18, Mr. Keeney served three years and three months in Company B, Tenth Iowa Infantry Survivors. (at this point the newspaper article was tore out and I do not have this part of it)

History of the Keeney Family From 1630The first ancestor of the Keeney family that we have any record of, was William Kinie (Note the spelling).
From Babson's History of Gloucester, Mass., we read his name among those who were known to have been residents of Gloucester, Mass., or tillers of the soil from the time of its present settlement to 1650. We also found that Gloucester was settled in 1633, but did not become a town until 1642. Also that William Kinie had a house and land which he sold to Thomas Prince in 1652. He had a daughter who married Ralph Parker. From another history found of New London, Conn., we saw where William Keeney of Gloucester, Mass., came with a party of friends to make arrangements for receiving Mr. Richard Blinman, who had been the minister of Gloucester for eight years and was now engaged to begin the ministery of the Pequoit Plantation.
They belonged to what was called the Cape Ann party and took up a grant of land at New London, October 16, 1650. These lots, nine in number of six acres each, extended each side of the narrow street from the Alder swamp in front to the Cedar Swamp on the west.
Early in 1651 a new street in the rear of the town plot wag opened up, and took the name of Cape Ann Lane; now called Ann Street.
The lot of William Keeney was nearly opposite to the south entrance of the new street on the Niantic Road. It also stated that William Keeney was Deputy in 1662, and we were lead to believe that he came from England to Plymouth with Mr. Blinman.
William Keeney died in New London in 1675 and we will try and follow his lineage down until the present.

Marshal Heber (h) Feb.28, 1865; (d) April 5, 1865.
These are the children who first started what is now known as the Keeney Reunion. We have also traced back a bit into the history of Amanda Mallery family. Dr. Zalmon Mallery, father of Amanda, was born Feb. 10, 1784, in Montgomery, Hampshire County, Mass., and died in Morenci, Lenawee County, Mich., Feb. 18, 1855, aged 71. He was reared a farmer, but studied medicine after he was 21, and became a very successful physician for several years, but after coming to Michigan he farmed exclusively. He married Anna Gould, July 10, 1811. She was born
(2)
in East Hadden, Conn., March 4, 1780. She was the daughter of John and Mary Gould. After their marriage they moved to Russel, Hampshire County, Mass. Five children were born there: (1) Mary Ann (m) George Mills; (2) Sophia (m) Silas Russ; (3) Alanson (m) Angeline--after Alanson's death she remarried to a man named Beals; one child that died young; Amanda (b) March 27, 1822, (m) Jonathan Bishop Keeney (b) March. 15, 1815, (m) May 1, 1839. Dr. Zalmon Mallery brought his little family to Michigan in 1836. He drove a covered wagon and Anna Gould Mallery drove a one-horse "Democrat" wagon. Amanda was always a sickly child; and at the age of 14 weighed but 75 pounds. It was at this time that they came to Michigan.
Our great grandfather, Joseph Keeney, was a farmer until he married Mary Bishop. He then went into the mercantile business. In 1817 they moved to Leroy, N. Y. When Jonathan Bishop was two years old. At Leroy, Joseph bought a farm which he worked until his death in 1842. Mary Bishop, the wife of Joseph, was born in New Lynn, Conn., 1781, and. died at Leroy, N.Y., in 1877, aged 96. Jonathan lived at home until he was 20. He then went to Franklin, Lenawee County, Mich., where he bought up land on section 21 and 22; After he had been in Michigan four years he married to Amanda Mallery. They lived at Franklin until 1849, when he sold his farm to his brother, John Keeney. On this farm he had two sons and three daughters. They then bought. up 160 acres in Cambridge, Lenawee County, Mich., and lived there until the death of his dear wife, our mother and grandmother. This occurred Feb. 9, 1885, while she was at the home of her son, John William, who lived in South Riley, Clinton County. She was 62 years of age. On the farm at Cambridge were born seven sons and one daughter. This farm was called one of the best in the county. The house was of brick, standing above the road and enclosed by a stone wall. At this home many a Thanksgiving dinner was enjoyed, and at no time was anyone turned away. Different sons worked the farm but at last it was sold to Arthur White. Father Keeney made his home with his son, Alanson, in Adrian, Mich., where he died April 20, 1897, aged 82. Both he and his wife were buried in the Cambridge cemetery, near the church where our mother and grandmother was superintendent of the Sunday school for so many years up until the time of her death. Father Keeney was a whig and later became a republican. As for religion he was a Baptist as were his father and mother. Mother Keeney was an Episcopalian and probably would have been a republican could she have voted.
This is the history traced as far as it could be found and also the family tree up to date.
