"Viola Priscilla Barton, while living with her mother and Daniel Barclayin Chicago, married Charles Perry Keeney on 25 Dec 1875. He was the sonof Charles Perry Keeney, Sr. and Mary Beck of Avon (near Des Moines)Iowa. His father was an original settler and developer of the Avon area.The son was the twelfth child of thirteen children, seven boys and sixgirls. He was in the real estate business in Chicago when he marriedViola Barton. He and his partner Warren went west to Kansas, where theystaked out land in Trego county for development. They name it WaKeeneyand developed the town. On 16 December 1878 a daughter, my mother, wasborn. She was the first child born in WaKeeney, Kansas. Their secondchild, Glennie Isola, was born in Chicago, May 21, 1880.
"From 1877 to 1886 Charles and Viola Keeney lived in WaKeeney and alsohad a home in Chicago. In 1886 Charles returned to Chicago and enteredthe real estate business with his brother James Franklin. In the winterof 1887, because of failing health, the family moved to Tarpon Springs,Florida. Charles died there 23 April 1891. Two years later his widowViola married John C. After the death of her husband, she moved to Alhambra California to benear her daughter, Viola Frank Keeney (1932). Her home in Tarpon Springs,Florida, on Spring Bayou, was given to the city and is now a park andlibrary.
"WaKeeney started a literary society immediately upon the town'. At the February 1879 meeting, there was a reading of Mark Twain' "Siamese Twins" by Mrs. C.P. 13 Sep 1879 - Mrs C.P. Keeney bought a stylish 3-spring phaeton from thecarriage maker. Co-owned property with her husband.
V. F. Keeney Gould note from funeral home says no burial - ashes scatteredon "her lot" in Florida. Obit. says died at the home of her daughter of
a heart attack.
Organized and acted in plays in Florida in 1896-7 (VFKGould scrapbook -CPG5) 1892- helped organize Women' Town Improvement Assn in TarponSprings - to keep streets clean and to beautify the town. Raised moneythrough plays, dances, auctions, etc., planted shrubs, hired streetsweepers. 1889-1900, elected president of State Fed of Women' TownImprovement Assns. Various records have various death dates. I am using here the one fromher obituary in WaKeeney papers, and in letter from her son James toWaKeeney World.
1880 census: Keeney, Mary, age 69,f,w,b.NC parents both b. NC, diabetes,living with dau. and son-in-law: Trego Co., KS, TWP 12, range 23, page 6,line 34 with Edmund and Martha Faulkner and family. Next door to John M.Keeney, age 37 and his wife Ellen and 4 children. James F., age 39,real estate dealer and legislator was living in WaKeeney by himself.Wayne Keeney Howell (LDS records) says her name Black.
