JAMES KEENEY
James Keeney (b. 1816)

JAMES KEENEY
(B. Aug. 20, 1816 - D. April 27, 1885)
Son of John, Jr and Mary (Buckhalter) Keeney

James Keeney was born August 20, 1816 in Fayette Co., Indiana. He was the son of John, Jr. and Mary Ramsey (Buckhalter) Keeney. He came with his parents to Ray County, Missouri in the early 1820's. James married three times: First, to Catherine Stewart, on March 19, 1840 in Ray County, Missouri, and fathered two children; Mary and Sarah Catherine. She died in childbirth in 1845. His second marriage was to Nancy Keeney, a cousin and daughter of Thomas and Lovina Boles Keeney, on March 1, 1846, and fathered three children; Miranda, Irena and Martha Elizabeth. Nancy died in 1862, and James' third marriage was to Miranda Michael Pearl, widow of John Pearl, and fathered one son, Mordecia, by this union.

In 1851, James and his family came to Oregon with the "Keeney Wagon Train." He settled on a farm between Elias and Jonathan's land claims.

A short time after arriving in the Calapooya Valley, Indians entered James Keeney's home, unannounced. The children were very frightened, and hid under their mothers' full skirts. The Indians wanted tobacco, which was given to them; then left, grabbing food from the table as they went out the door.

James Keeney died near Brownsville on April 27, 1885. Miranda Michael Pearl Keeney died June 8, 1919 in Kalispell, Montana and was buried in Brownsville, Oregon.
