Hi Everyone ,

The May issue was posted 23 April 2000 & now it's the end of April as I get started on this issue, and I selected John Keeney Jr., as the subject for the Descendants of section in that Don McGlothlen asked a question about him that I really couldn't answer, so if anyone is following John Jr's line please let me know.

I received Roscoe's Keeney Update Spring 2000 issue the other day and in a cover letter he states  that due to health complications he does not know how many more issues he'll put out in the upcoming months. As most of you probably know, Roscoe has collected data on the Keeney family for several years and published a few books on the family (2,597 Keeney Relatives, 435 more Keeney Relatives), and has been publishing the Keeney Update since 1983. We all wish him the best and hope for his improved health

Keeney, (see New on the site).

Do you know if Ralph R. Keeney is still alive?  I last contacted him in 1996, asking about getting a copy of Wagon Ruts West... He then lived in The Dalles, OR.

I think it is fairly clear that the age of the adult female listed with the family that appears to be that of John Jonathan Keeney, Jr. in the Ray Co, MO 1830 census is not that of Mary Burkhalter. I'll analyze the ages in that family census based on the data you sent and get back to you on that.

Do you have an address for someone who might have some more detail on John Jonathan Keeney Jr's  family unit??

I'm especially interested in finding someone who has sent for his probate file...... or is familiar with him being named guardian of the two Turnidge sisters, Jane Vellery and Mary Ann, that later married William and Abraham McLaughlin in Ray Co. MO.

Looks like sending for some court records may be my next step.

 While researching my Keeney roots, I noted that several of Elias

Keeney's children are not accounted for.

According to your records Elias Keeney (1828-1910) was married three (3) times. First marriage was to Margaret Jane Hyatt which produced four (4) children; Eli J., Rebecca, Mary Emma and John H. His second marriage was to Lucinda G. VanWinkle (1840-1887). This marriage produced NINE (9) children one of which was my great grandfather, LeRoy J.

The additional included (in order of birth) George W. (1861), Rhoda A. (1863), James M. (1865), Clark (1868), Edward Elias (1869), Philip or Phillip (1870), Homer J. (1873), LeRoy J., a.k.a. "Roy" 1876) and Ilena J. date not known. 

Elias' third marriage was to Matilda Noffsinger b. 1839, m. 1887, d. 1907. There were no children.

 Roy Keeney married Alice Stevenson (apparently related to Robert Louis). Roy & Alice had four children Floyd, Horace E., Ruth and Jessica. Horace was my grandfather; married to Agnes May Dilts. They had four children; Elizabeth, William "Bill", Donald S. and Sandra. Donald is my father. 

Is there any way to get this incorporated into your database? I'm working on collecting additional information on my immediate klan. Elias was quite a wild one only to be eclipsed by his then famous

brother and Oregon Pioneer, Captain Jonathan Keeney.

Keeney Question

I am interested in information about John Jonathan Keeney, Jr. He was reportedly born on 24 June 1772 near Keeney Knob Mts, VA and died on 6 December 1845 in Holt Co, MO. Ray Co, MO land records for the 1820's show that John Keeney owned land there. He left a will which was probated (I have not as yet sent for this data.) His perhaps first wife was Mary Burkhalter, born in 1873 and died 24 June, 1872 in Linn Co, OR.

Problem is, I have the probate record for my fourth great grandfather, John McLaughlin, who died in 1828 in Lafayette Co, MO. In that record, his will states that his daughter Susannah, had married a John Keeney. Further, the 1830 census for Ray Co, MO shows the data for John Keeney and family with ages supporting not Mary Burkhalter, but Susannah McLaughlin as being that John Keeney's wife. I can find no record of two John Keeney's being in Missouri in this time period.

Does anyone know of anyone researching Keeney's that might have more specific data on the John Keeney's in Missouri during the 1820 to 1845 time period???

Charley (Charlie, or Charly) Keeney 1850's ?

I am trying to place a Charlie Keeney (possibly Charley or Charly). I have a few pictures of him, and one of them is labeled "Charlie Keeney half brother of Jeannie Keeney". Amoung the stack of letters and pictures, one letter mentions that it should read "Charly" According to my Dad, A story he heard as a child, about the trip west, mentioned that A Charlie Keeney drove one of the wagons. But I can't place a Charlie (Charles, Charley, Charly etc ...) anywhere amoung the Keeney pioneers that came west.

The picture may have come from a photo album of a Marshall Keeney (who would be the son of Jonathan Jacob, son of Jonathan, son of Michael, son of Peter).

Ida F. Keeney-Cass County Iowa around 1915

Today we learned from the Social Security card Application of my wife's mother that her mother was Ida F. Keeney. My wife's mother was born in Griswold, Cass Cty, Iowa on December 16, 1915. Her names was Maxine Mae Lischer.
Her father was George Lischer. We suspect that my wife's grandmother was most likely born between 1875 and 1898. There are two Ida Keeney's (no middle name) listed in the data bases on this site without any other information. I'd appreciate it if one of you could check if there is a possible connection to my wife's grandmother.

I am looking for ANY information or resources to find informaion on my deceased father. His name is Patrick Dennis Keeney. He died of cancer in 1987 (I think). He and my mother seperated when I was a baby and I never knew him. His mothers name was Hilda Keeney, she lived in CA. I think that he has 2 brothers and 1 sister. It seems that as we look into early Keeney history, lots of interesting questions arise.

I believe that if enough attention is brought to bear on these items, we just might significantly clarify several items about Rev Jonathan Anthony Keeney’s siblings and the next earlier generation......

Here is an interesting one for Keeney researchers:
Who were these two Keeneys???
From History of Lafayette Co, MO, by St. Louis Historical Co, published in 1881:
p213. “The first marriage record in the county is a curiosity and we copy it “verbatim et spellatim”: Missouri State. Lillard county. No ye to home it may concern that this 8 day of February 1821 was joined together in the holy estate of marimony James Keeney and Anney Ramsey by me Jonathan Keeney, G.M.” (Lafayette county was formed from Lillard county and G.M. stands for Gospel Minister.)

I wonder if this Jonathan Keeney was the Rev. Jonathan Anthony Keeney? Did he venture out to Missouri in 1821? Note that the wife of Jonathan’s father, John Jonathan Keeney, was Mary RAMSEY Burckhalter.
Is the Ramsey name of significance?

Please note: Charles M. McGlothlen and Rev Jonathan Anthony Keeney’s wife, Mary Hannah “Polly” McGlothlen, were siblings. Charles M. McGlothlen and family were known to have been in Clay and Ray counties in Missouri, across the river from Lillard / Lafayette county, in 1821.

How about some Keeney researcher help on this one?
