Editor's note

Hi Everyone,

It's been about a month since the last posting of the KFG online newsletter. I try to post the newest issue no later then the 28th of the month, if you're a member of the newsletter list & don't receive an e-mail notification by then, click here to let me know.

In the last month I've gotten some updates on the McGlothlen line (see From the Inbox). And John Turley also sent me a couple of GEDCOM's that will update the line a little more.

Another Keeney line is now up on the site thanks to Patsy Litten.

Remember if you want to post pictures or data I'll provide you with a directory (FREE of charge) this is a standing offer at least until I run out of space on the server.

I'm looking for tips & suggestions on some things you'd like to see in this newsletter.

This week I  got set up for using DSL for my Internet connection, I've been looking into this for awhile now, & in doing so it became apparent that I needed to install a firewall,  I believe that I have found a really good one and the price is right also, it's called ZoneAlarm and it's FREE for personal use or just $19.95 for business use, the file size for down load is 1.6mb but is well worth the time it takes to download. I've been using ZA since mid February and have completely blocked all attempts of being hacked, or allowing applications to access the internet with out my knowledge.

Subject:  McGlothlen Ancestry - At Last!

Hello Daniell,
It has been some time since I last communicated with you about our McGlothlen ancestry. You may remember that I had never found any source data supporting the identification of William Glackin(g) and Elizabeth Boggs as being the parents of our ancestor, Charles M. McGlothlen and his sister, Mary Hannah McGlothlen. Well, they are not and we now have proof of who were their parents. This search had been underway for over 50 years that I am aware of - perhaps longer! What a relief to identify these ancestors.

>From a 1928 intestate probate file for John McLaughlin in Lafayette county, Missouri, we found that the parents of our two known early McGlothlens are as identified in the following descendancy. Note that Charles M. and Mary H. had other siblings, which we suspected but had never found information regarding their identities. We are now in the process of discovering further information about our new found earliest McGlothlen/McLaughlin/McLoughlin ancestors. Today, we believe they came to America about 1752 directly from Ireland's county Donegal.

Please correct your web pages to at least delete the reference to William Glackin(g) and Elizabeth Boggs. Also, please check your web pages regarding the children of Charles M. McGlothlen and their spouses against the following, as it more correctly identifies them than data from John Turley or myself in earlier publications.

More than a little of my ancestry data was in error back then. I have included the listing of names and dates for the children of Mary H. McGlothlen in the following as I know them and would appreciate any corrections.

Lastly, note that the surname spelling used by Charles M. and Mary Hannah WAS McGlothlen. It may be that other of their siblings used the spelling McLaughlin and yet others used McGlothlin. We plan to identify just how that was done in the months ahead.

As Always, feel free to refer questions to me about McGlothlen Ancestry.

All the Best, .

Don McGlothlen,
McGlothlen/McLaughlin/McLoughlin Ancestry Researcher

Murphy's Law of Genealogy

The public ceremony in which your distinguished ancestor participated and at which the platform collapsed under him turned out to be a hanging.

When at last after much hard work you have solved the mystery you have been working on for two years, your aunt says, "I could have told you that".

You grandmother's maiden name that you have searched for four years was on a letter in a box in the attic all the time.

You never asked your father about his family when he was alive because you weren't interested in genealogy then.

The will you need is in the safe on board the Titanic.

Copies of old newspapers have holes occurring only on the surnames.

John, son of Thomas, the immigrant whom your relatives claim as the family progenitor, died on board ship at age 10.

Your great grandfather's newspaper obituary states that he died leaving no issue of record.

Another genealogist has just insulted the keeper of the vital records you need.

The relative who had all the family photographs gave them all to her daughter who has no interest in genealogy and no inclination to share.

The only record you find for your great grandfather is that his property was sold at a sheriff's sale for insolvency.

The one document that would supply the missing link in your dead-end line has been lost due to fire, flood or war.

The town clerk to whom you wrote for the information sends you a long handwritten letter which is totally illegible.

The spelling for your European ancestor's name bears no relationship to its current spelling or pronunciation.

None of the pictures in your recently deceased grandmother's photo album have names written on them.

No one in your family tree ever did anything noteworthy, owned property, was sued or was named in wills.

You learn that your great aunt's executor just sold her life's collection of family genealogical materials to a flea market dealer "somewhere in New York City"

Ink fades and paper deteriorates at a rate inversely proportional to the value of the data recorded.

The 37 volumes, sixteen thousand-page history of your county of origin aren’t indexed.

You finally find your great grandparent's wedding records and discover that the brides' father was named John Smith.

Keeney

Posted by Lois on April 16, 19100 at 09:55:29:

I have pictures with the names of Buster and Cleon Keeney, Pete and Anita Keeney, April 10, 1972, Boise Idaho on them. A picture that includes the names of Bud Keeney and Orvel Keeney, Walter Keeney, Emma Black. A notation that says Bud Keeney is Aunt May Black's son? These pictures were taken at Mannford, Oklahoma July 4, 1925. I beleive this "Aunt May" is a sister to my Grandfather William Black. Does anyone have information concerning these names?

Frank Kinney

Posted by Terrion April 13, 2000 at 18:22:16:

Just thought I would try a different spelling and hope for some success. Looking for Frank Harold Kinney, born in Illinois in 1872-1879? Mother's name Tillie. Father's name James or John? Tillie and Frank lived in SD in the early 1900's with no mention of father. He married Maude LaPlante in 1910 divorced in 1918. Died in SD in 1933 he was a former court clerk in SD.

Benjamin Keeney

Posted by Lorena Linder on March 31, 19100 at 10:30:05:

I've been searching for the parents of Benjamin Ray Keeney and George P.Keeney. I've found two sources that state that Benjamin was born in New York about 1817. Benjamin married Elizabeth Drew sometime around 1850 in Clinton, Macomb, MI. Benjamin died in San Salvador (La Libertad) 10 June
1881. Children that I know of are Marie Antoinette Keeney b. abt 1846 and John Drew Keeney.

George P. Keeney was born about 1920, married Elisabeth W. Phillips 1861 in Nevada City, CA, and died 1869 in Nevada City, CA. Known children George Phillips Keeney, and Franklin Wallace Keeney.

Any help that you can give me or ideas, I'll greatly appreciate.

First New England Keeney (Kinne) families

I am completing a fairly exhaustive report on John Kinne, son of Sir Thomas, listing about 2,000 of his descendents in New England, New Yotk, New Jersey and points West; most of the info comes from questions you have raised and material you have sent. If you'd like to add a family (clearly identified with names & dates) or request a copy (probably in June) try R.Keeney

Family Stories

NONE SENT IN

Come on folks somebody has to have family stories out there.

This is from the book Wagon Ruts West by Ralph R. Keeney, pages 55 - 57

A BOY ON THE KEENEY FARM

( LAND OF GOSHEN)

AS TOLD BY THOMAS KEENEY: SON OF ANDREW AND AMANDA KEENEY

About 1880

The old farm used to be swarming with kids; there were the Dillard’s and the Matlock’s, as well as the Keeney boys, and it was a rare day that we weren't able to think up some new devilry.

A creek ran down through the Keeney and Matlock places and it was great sport for us to chase Old Man Matlock's pigs into the creek and make them swim. One time two Dillard boys and two Matlocks and myself rounded up the pigs and I chased them towards the creek while the others stood by with clubs to keep them headed for the water. When one pig was about to escape, Lane Matlock let fly with his club and hit the pig such a wallop that he died right there. We decided to bury Mr. Pig in leaves in the woods. Of course, by the time Old Matlock came along, the leaves had blown off and he found the pig. For a long time, after that, I had Lane at my mercy. Whenever he had something I wanted, I only had to threaten to tell his Old Man about the pig, and Lane would give up meekly.

Father put up a building on the farm for Old Man Hoff, the Cheese maker, to use as a factory. Later, Hoff got mad and left, but he took all the window sashes with him, leaving a shell of a building. The place got to be a Convention Hall for all the cats in the country, and their nightly caterwauling could be heard in Goshen, nearly a mile away. I saw a chance for some entertainment, so I boarded up the downstairs windows, then I would slip in, early in the morning, and raise a hullabaloo and chase about a hundred cats round and round, their eyes shining like headlights in the dark; then, led by an old tom cat, they'd sail up the stairway like a flock of flying squirrels and out the open windows to the ground, two stories below.

One day Lane Matlock brought over his new dog, a young terrier, and I said;

"Let's give the pup some fun." So, we went over to "The Katzenjammer Castle" and put the dog in and slammed the door. In the uproar that followed, we could not tell whether the cats or the pup were having the worst of it, but pretty soon the usual stream of cats came streaming out of an upstairs window, with tails spread out, and right behind the last cat came the dog. He was so hot after the cats, that he never did notice the window until he came tumbling down. The cats had gotten used to the high dive, but the dog was never much good as a hunter after that.

Old Hoff lived in our homestead log cabin before Father built his cheese factory. When he moved into the factory, he left a lot of hams and bacon, he had cured, in a smokehouse close to the cabin. We boys used the log cabin as sort of a clubhouse, and we'd hack off a big chunk of Hoff's ham and roast it in the cabin fireplace. Hoff knew what was going on, but had not been able to catch the thieves.

One crisp fall evening, just right for a fire and a chunk of hot ham, seven of us were there, feasting on half a ham, when somebody yelled; "Jiggers for Hoff!" The whole seven of us dropped our hambones and scrambled through a scuttle in the ceiling and lay among the rafters, trying not to breathe. Hoff surveyed the fire and the wreckage of his fine ham. Then, he broke out with such a oration of German wrath and imprecation that I nearly choked to death trying not to laugh out loud.

There was an old Irishman, named Mike, who used to work on our farm pretty regularly. He was the biggest eater I ever saw, and one time Dad figured out that Mike was receiving far more than he was worth, board considered. The next time Mike came around, my Father told him he wouldn't need him anymore.

"Well, s'long's I'm here, I'll have a bite to eat," said Mike, and the lazy old bum stayed for a couple of days, eating regularly, but not doing any work because he was not hired. Mike was the dirtiest, orney-looking, old squirt-eyed varmit in the country, and Mother was a little afraid of him. The second day, Dad had to go to town, and when he came back, at supper time, and found Mike still there, he called out,

"Hey Mike, - didn't I tell you I don't want you? Now the next time I catch you hanging around this place when I'm away, I'll kill you! Now, get out!!"

Mike replied, with injured dignity,

"Well Keeney, if you're going to fly off the handle like that, I guess I'll be going," and he went over to Dillards, where he said;

"I just can't make out that man Keeney; he used to be all right as far as I could see, but lately he's been getting so crazy jealous that 'taint safe to be around him"'.

"Yes," Dillard said; "The Keeneys are like that; very violent too. If I were you, I'd keep away from there."

Mother had a pet cat which was not like other cats. It was a nice, gentle pussy, with a ribbon around it's neck, and it never associated with the cats at the old cheese factory.

One day, Mother baked a dozen pies and let them set on the log diningroom table, to cool, and then she was called to a neighbor's --a new baby coming, or something like that.

Alf Dillard and I were in the house alone, and had to find something to do. We decided to have some fun with Kitty, so we got a small tin box, with some rattly nicknacks in it, and tied it to her tail with a rawhide string, and turned her loose. The first jump and she landed on the table with an awful "Yee-0-w-!!", and went right down the length of the table, through every pie, and pie flew in all directions. Out she went through the door, with the box clattering behind her, and we next saw a waving streak through the grain field as she headed for the next county.

For weeks, Mother called, "Kitty - Kitty", and no kitty came.

Of course, no one knew anything about her. Then she came back. The box was gone, but a piece of the rawhide was still knotted to her tail; the tail was dead, or ossified, and was curled in a stiff hook to one side. When she'd go through a door, the hook would catch on the door jam and she'd have to back up and try again. This went on until once she went through a door too fast, and the tail broke off. All this nearly broke Mother's heart, because she thought so much of Kitty.
